Tour Overview
Two of Tanzania's most distinctive parks in a compact 3-day safari. Tarangire's ancient baobab trees host the largest elephant herds in Tanzania, while the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — concentrates an astonishing density of wildlife including all Big Five members in one natural amphitheater.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Arusha to Tarangire, named after the Tarangire River that attracts enormous concentrations of wildlife during the dry season. The park is famous for its ancient baobab trees — some over 1,000 years old — creating a dramatic landscape unlike any other African park. Tarangire has the largest elephant herds in Tanzania; during dry months, herds of 200-300 elephants congregate along the river. Game drive through baobab woodlands and along the river, spotting elephants, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, fringe-eared oryx, and greater kudu. The birdlife is outstanding with over 550 species recorded, including breeding colonies of yellow-collared lovebirds found only here.
Morning game drive in Tarangire for final sightings among the ancient baobabs and along the river where elephants continue to gather. After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ascend to the crater rim at 2,300 meters and check into your rim lodge with jaw-dropping views 600 meters down into the caldera below. The crater floor, 20 kilometers across, is visible from the rim with its lake, grasslands, and forests creating a perfect natural wildlife enclosure. Watch the sunset paint the crater in shades of gold and crimson — one of Africa's most spectacular views.
Early morning descent into the crater floor — a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing approximately 25,000 animals in this extraordinary natural amphitheater. The density of wildlife is incredible — endangered black rhinos graze the open grasslands (Ngorongoro has one of the highest densities in Tanzania), massive-maned lions patrol their territory, elephants browse along the crater walls, and enormous buffalo herds darken the plains. The crater's soda lake attracts flamingos creating pink ribbons across the water, while hippo pools are home to dozens of wallowing hippos. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the hippo pool. Ascend from the crater in the afternoon and drive back to Arusha.
