5-Day Uganda Gorilla & Chimp Trek

Day 1 is built around Equator crossing and Fort Portal. Early morning departure from Entebbe driving west through the lush Ugandan countryside. Cross the Equator (stop for photos at the monument) and continue through Fort Portal — a charming town surrounded by tea plantations and crater lakes. The 5-6 hour drive offers striking views of the Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon) on clear days. Reach your lodge near Kibale Forest in the afternoon. The focus today is Chimpanzee tracking — 1 hour and 12 primate species. Report to the park headquarters at 8:00 AM for registration and briefing. Enter the ancient tropical rainforest with experienced trackers who have been monitoring the habituated chimpanzee communities for years. The trek takes 1-4 hours through dense forest, listening for the distinctive pant-hoot calls and crashing branches that signal chimps are nearby. When you locate the chimpanzee community, spend one memorable hour observing these fascinating primates — watching them groom each other, play in the trees, use tools to extract insects, and communicate with an extraordinary range of vocalizations. Kibale is also home to 12 other primate species including red colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys. Afternoon optional Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk for additional primates and exceptional birdlife.

Today's route brings together Queen Elizabeth scenic drive and Ishasha sector. Following breakfast, drive south through Queen Elizabeth National Park sector with a chance to spot animals from the road, including elephants and Uganda kob antelope. Travel onward through the Ishasha sector — famous for its tree-climbing lions — though time may not permit a full game drive. The scenic route passes through rolling hills, tea estates, and small villages. Reach your Bwindi lodge in the late afternoon. Evening briefing on gorilla trekking protocols — maximum group size of 8 people, one hour with the gorillas, no flash photography, maintain 7-meter distance, and what to do if a silverback charges.

Expect the day to center on Mountain gorilla trekking — 1 hour and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highlight of your entire East Africa journey. Register at 8:00 AM and receive your gorilla family assignment. Trek into the dense, misty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biologically diverse forests on Earth. The trek can take 1-6 hours depending on where the gorillas are, traversing steep muddy trails through thick jungle and vine tangles. When the trackers locate the family, drop your packs and approach quietly. Spend one memorable hour sitting just meters from a gorilla family — watching a 200-kilogram silverback beat his chest, mothers tenderly cradling tiny babies, juveniles wrestling and swinging through branches, and blackbacks showing off their strength. The eye contact with a wild mountain gorilla is one of the most profoundly moving wildlife experiences on Earth. Head back to your lodge exhausted but transformed. Celebration dinner.

Day 5 is built around Optional Batwa cultural experience and Scenic return drive. Following breakfast, optional morning community walk visiting the local Batwa pygmy community — the original forest dwellers — for cultural performances, traditional songs, and stories of their ancient forest life. Set out from Bwindi and drive back to Entebbe/Kampala (approximately 8-9 hours with comfort stops). Alternatively, fly from the Bwindi airstrip to Entebbe (1 hour, additional cost). Transfer to airport or hotel.
