    Tour Overview

Combine the rugged semi-arid beauty of Samburu with the legendary Masai Mara. Samburu is home to rare northern species found nowhere else in Kenya — the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. Follow this with the Big Five and migration action of the Masai Mara.

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

Drive north through the Mount Kenya region to Samburu arriving by lunchtime. The landscape shifts dramatically from lush highlands to semi-arid bushland dotted with acacia and doum palms. Check into your riverside lodge overlooking the Ewaso Ng'iro River where elephants come to drink and crocodiles bask on the banks. Afternoon game drive in Samburu's rugged terrain searching for the unique northern species — the striking reticulated giraffe with its geometric patterns, the long-necked gerenuk standing on hind legs to browse, and the rare Grevy's zebra with its narrow stripes. Samburu's predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog.

Full day exploring Samburu's diverse habitats. Morning drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River where elephants wade and bathe, crocodiles lurk in the shallows, and a dazzling array of birds nest in the riverine doum palms. Search for the elusive leopard — Samburu is one of Kenya's best leopard habitats with cats often spotted resting in riverside trees during the heat of the day. Afternoon drive through the open plains and rocky outcrops, spotting Beisa oryx with their rapier-straight horns, Somali ostrich with their blue legs, and the ever-entertaining dwarf mongoose colonies darting between termite mounds. The birdlife is exceptional with vulturine guineafowl, golden-breasted starling, and over 450 recorded species.

After breakfast, drive south to the Masai Mara (approximately 6-7 hours via Nairobi bypass). The journey takes you through changing landscapes from Samburu's arid bushland through the green highlands of central Kenya and down into the Mara's rolling golden savannah. Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your Mara lodge. Evening game drive as an introduction to the Mara's incredible wildlife density — a dramatic contrast to Samburu's rugged beauty.
