Tour Overview
Witness Africa's most photogenic elephant herds beneath the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on an affordable 3-day budget camping safari. Amboseli National Park offers some of the most iconic safari imagery in Africa — massive tuskers roaming the open plains with Africa's highest peak towering 5,895 meters in the background.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi early morning and drive south through the Kapiti Plains with Mount Kilimanjaro gradually appearing on the horizon as you approach Amboseli. The 4-hour drive offers stunning views of the changing landscape from lush highlands to dry savannah. Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning and check into your budget camp. After a freshly prepared lunch, head out for your first afternoon game drive. Amboseli is famous for its giant elephant herds — some of the largest tuskers in Africa roam freely here, and you may encounter herds of 50 or more elephants, including tiny calves, moving across the golden grasslands with Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak as the most spectacular backdrop in African safari photography. Visit Observation Hill for a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view across the entire park, the swamps, and the mountain. Return to camp for dinner under the stars.
Wake before dawn for a sunrise game drive — Kilimanjaro glows pink and gold at dawn, creating the most magical photography conditions when the mountain is typically clearest before clouds build up. The swamp areas fed by Kilimanjaro's underground meltwater attract extraordinary concentrations of wildlife — elephants, buffalo, hippos, and diverse waterbirds including martial eagles, African fish eagles, and secretary birds. After returning for breakfast, rest during the midday heat before heading out for an extended afternoon game drive on the open plains. Search for lions resting under bushes, cheetahs scanning from termite mounds, hyenas at their dens, and the thousands of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle that share the plains. Amboseli has over 400 recorded bird species making it a birder's paradise alongside the big game. Return to camp for dinner.
Enjoy a final early morning game drive to catch the last incredible wildlife encounters and photography opportunities before the day heats up. The early hours often reward with elephant families heading to the swamps to drink and bathe, and predators returning from their nocturnal hunts. After the game drive, return to camp for a hearty breakfast, pack up your tent, and check out. Depart Amboseli and drive back to Nairobi, arriving by approximately 4:00 PM. Drop-off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. End of safari.
