Tour Overview
Explore Kenya's largest national park — the vast Tsavo ecosystem split into East and West. Tsavo East is famous for its open plains, the Galana River, and the legendary red elephants that dust-bathe in distinctive laterite soil. Tsavo West offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear Mzima Springs, and the ancient Shetani Lava Flows.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Nairobi early morning and drive southeast along the Mombasa Highway to Tsavo East National Park — one half of Kenya's largest conservation area and a vast wilderness of open savannah, ancient baobabs, and the life-giving Galana River. Arrive by lunchtime and check into your budget camp. After lunch, head out for your first afternoon game drive. Tsavo East is famous for its legendary red elephants — entire herds that dust-bathe in the park's distinctive red laterite soil, turning themselves the color of the earth. Spot lions, buffalo, giraffes, lesser kudu, and the rich birdlife that thrives along the Galana River. Visit the scenic Galana River where crocodiles bask on the banks and hippos wallow in the deeper pools.
Full day exploring the vast plains of Tsavo East. Morning drive to the spectacular Lugard Falls on the Galana River — where the river forces through sculptured rock formations polished smooth by millennia of water flow. Continue along the Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow stretching an incredible 300 kilometers. Visit Mudanda Rock — a massive natural water catchment resembling an enormous whale's back, where hundreds of elephants gather to drink during dry season, creating one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in Kenya. Afternoon game drive through different habitats searching for the park's diverse wildlife in this uncrowded wilderness.
After breakfast, drive to Tsavo West — the other half of the Tsavo ecosystem with dramatically different landscapes. Afternoon game drive visiting the crystal-clear Mzima Springs — natural pools fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro where you can watch hippos gliding gracefully through the water and crocodiles lurking in the depths through a unique underwater observation chamber. Continue to the Shetani Lava Flows — a vast expanse of black volcanic rock formed just 200 years ago by the last eruption, stretching eerily across the landscape. Climb to Roaring Rocks viewpoint for panoramic views across the park. Spot elephants, buffalo, leopard, lesser kudu, gerenuk, and over 400 bird species.
Early morning game drive in Tsavo West for final wildlife encounters as the park awakens with the first light of dawn. The volcanic landscape of Tsavo West takes on dramatic colors in the early morning — deep reds, purples, and golds creating a photographer's paradise. After breakfast, pack up camp and drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening. Drop-off at your hotel or JKIA airport.
