Tour Overview
Southern Kenya's finest parks on a budget — elephants beneath Kilimanjaro in Amboseli, volcanic landscapes and Mzima Springs in Tsavo West, and the famous red elephants of Tsavo East. Six days exploring Kenya's most diverse southern safari circuit.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Early morning departure from Nairobi heading south on the Mombasa Highway. The 4-hour drive takes you through Athi River and the Kapiti Plains, with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro emerging on the horizon as you approach Amboseli. Arrive at Amboseli National Park by late morning and check into your budget camp. After lunch, embark on an afternoon game drive across the park's open plains. Watch as giant elephant herds move across the golden grasslands with Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak as the spectacular backdrop. Spot wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle sharing the plains with their predators.
Full day of morning and afternoon game drives in Amboseli. The early morning offers the best chance for clear Kilimanjaro views before clouds build up, and golden light creates perfect conditions for photography. Drive through different habitats — dry lake beds, swamps, woodlands, and open plains — each attracting different wildlife. The Amboseli swamps are magnets for elephants, hippos, and buffalo during dry season, while the open plains attract large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and their predators. Visit Observation Hill for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the entire park and the marshes fed by Kilimanjaro's underground melt water.
After breakfast, drive to Tsavo West National Park. Tsavo West is known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, the crystal-clear Mzima Springs where you can watch hippos and crocodiles through an underwater viewing chamber. Visit the dramatic Shetani Lava Flows — a vast expanse of black volcanic rock formed just 200 years ago. Afternoon game drive searching for elephant, buffalo, lesser kudu, gerenuk, and the park's rich birdlife including over 400 recorded species.
Full day exploring Tsavo West's rugged beauty with game drives through the park's diverse terrain. Morning drive along the Tsavo River spotting hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds. The afternoon takes you through riverine forests and acacia woodlands where lesser kudu browse and gerenuk stand on their hind legs to reach high branches. The park's volcanic landscape creates a dramatic backdrop unlike any other safari destination in Kenya. Watch for leopards in rocky outcrops and elephants moving through the bush.
Drive to Tsavo East National Park across the Tsavo River bridge. Tsavo East is famous for its vast open plains, the Galana River, and the legendary red elephants that dust-bathe in the park's distinctive laterite soil. Full-day game drive along the Galana River where crocodiles and hippos thrive. Visit the stunning Lugard Falls where the river forces through sculptured rock formations, and drive along the Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow stretching 300 kilometers. The park's uncrowded nature means more exclusive wildlife encounters.
Final early morning game drive in Tsavo East for last wildlife sightings as the park comes alive at dawn. After breakfast, check out and drive back to Nairobi arriving approximately 4:00-5:00 PM. Drop-off at your hotel or JKIA airport.
