6 Days Kilimanjaro — Marangu Route
From $2,300 per person • 6 Days / 5 Nights
Tour Overview
The classic 'Coca-Cola Route' — the oldest and most established path to Kilimanjaro's summit. The only route offering sleeping huts with mattresses instead of tents, making it the most comfortable climb. While it has a lower summit success rate (65%) due to its steeper ascent profile, it remains popular for its relative comfort and the historical experience of following the first ascent route.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Trek through beautiful montane rainforest alive with Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and exotic tropical birds. The well-maintained trail passes through dense forest with towering trees draped in moss and lianas. Arrive at Mandara Hut — a cluster of wooden A-frame huts in a forest clearing with basic but comfortable beds and mattresses. Optional afternoon hike to Maundi Crater for panoramic views across the Kenyan plains stretching to the horizon.
Emerge from the forest into open alpine moorland with stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks stretching above. The landscape opens up dramatically — giant heathers and lobelia create an otherworldly atmosphere as you trek across moorland dotted with everlasting flowers. Horombo Hut is a larger camp with a dining hall, basic facilities, and spectacular views. The huts here are spread across a moorland slope with views that extend across the northern plains of Tanzania.
Essential rest day with an acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Hut (4,200m) and the dramatic Zebra Rocks — distinctive striped rock formations created by volcanic activity and erosion. The hike to higher altitude followed by descent to sleep at Horombo dramatically improves your summit chances by triggering your body's acclimatization response. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating extensively with 3-4 liters of water, and preparing mentally for the days ahead.
Trek across the lunar-like alpine desert — a barren, rocky landscape stretching between the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks that resembles the surface of another planet. The air thins noticeably with each hour of trekking as you climb above 4,000m. Vegetation disappears almost entirely as you enter the alpine desert zone. Arrive at Kibo Hut, the last stop before the summit — a stone building at 4,703m. The views of the summit glaciers above are both inspiring and intimidating. Early dinner and attempt to rest before the midnight summit push.
Depart at midnight, climbing through the night up steep volcanic scree in sub-zero temperatures by headlamp. The ascent to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim is the most physically demanding section — each step requires enormous effort in the thin air at extreme altitude. Continue along the crater rim past Hans Meyer Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. The sunrise from the summit is one of the most incredible sights on Earth — the shadow of Kilimanjaro stretching across the African plains below. Celebrate, photograph the iconic summit sign, then begin the long descent all the way to Horombo Hut — a triumphant but exhausting day covering over 20km.
Final descent through all ecological zones — from alpine moorland through heath and back into the lush rainforest. The walk down through the forest after the summit is pure joy — warm air, birdsong, and the deep satisfaction of achievement. Arrive at Marangu Gate where you receive your summit certificate — proof of your incredible accomplishment. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate!
