9 Days Kilimanjaro Climb — Lemosho Route
From $3,400 per person • 9 Days / 8 Nights
Tour Overview
The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most beautiful and scenic route to Kilimanjaro's summit with the highest success rate of all routes (85-90%). Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, it offers incredible 360-degree panoramas, diverse ecological zones, excellent acclimatization, and fewer crowds than Machame or Marangu.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Londorossi Gate on the remote western side of Kilimanjaro. The approach road passes through local villages and farmland before entering the national park. Trek through pristine montane rainforest alive with Colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy, blue monkeys chattering in the undergrowth, and tropical birds flashing between the trees. The remote starting point means you may be the only group on the trail — a rare luxury on Kilimanjaro. Arrive at Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa) deep in the ancient forest.
Emerge from the forest onto the vast Shira Plateau, a dramatic high-altitude moorland formed by the collapse of Kilimanjaro's oldest volcanic cone. Views open up spectacularly across the plateau with Kibo Peak looming ahead and Mount Meru visible in the far distance across the plains. The landscape is dotted with giant heathers and lobelia plants, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Trek across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic sections. Giant lobelia and groundsel dot the landscape as you walk across this ancient volcanic caldera. The plateau's open terrain provides 360-degree panoramic views in every direction. Afternoon acclimatization hike up toward the Shira Cathedral rock formation and back to camp.
Critical acclimatization day. Climb high to Lava Tower at 4,630m where the altitude becomes palpable and the air noticeably thin. This 'climb high, sleep low' strategy is essential for summit success. Descend through the surreal Senecio forest with giant groundsel plants — bizarre tree-like plants found only on Africa's highest mountains, some growing over 5 meters tall in the thin mountain air.
Morning scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — the most exciting section of the climb with hands-on scrambling up the near-vertical rock face. The views from the top are staggering — the southern glaciers gleam above while clouds swirl below your feet. Continue traversing through the alpine desert to Karanga Valley camp.
Trek through the barren alpine desert landscape to Barafu base camp — your launch pad for the summit attempt. The terrain is rocky and sparse with virtually no vegetation at this altitude. Arrive at Barafu by early afternoon. Rest, eat well, hydrate extensively, and attempt to sleep. Your guides will brief you on summit night procedures — departure time, clothing layers, headlamp batteries, and mental preparation for the most challenging night of your life.
Midnight departure from Barafu. Trek through the night under a canopy of brilliant stars in sub-zero temperatures, switchbacking up steep volcanic scree. Each step requires concentration as the thin air at extreme altitude makes even simple movement exhausting. Reach Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim as the first rays of sunrise illuminate the glaciers and clouds stretching to the horizon — a moment of pure transcendence. Continue along the crater rim past ancient glaciers to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m — the Roof of Africa. Stand on the highest point in Africa, photograph the iconic summit sign, and savor the achievement. Descend to Millennium Camp through the alpine desert.
Final descent through the lush montane rainforest to Mweka Gate. The warm forest air after days at altitude feels incredible. Receive your summit certificate — proof of conquering Africa's highest peak. Transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
Well-deserved rest day in Moshi or Arusha. Optional cultural tour of the local area, spa treatment, or simply relax and reflect on your incredible achievement. Airport transfer for your onward journey.
