7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb — Machame Extended
From $2,600 per person • 7 Days / 6 Nights
Tour Overview
The 7-day Machame Route adds an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp compared to the standard 6-day version. This significantly increases your summit success rate to 80-85% by allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude. Recommended for those who want the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Register with park authorities and begin trekking through lush montane rainforest. Listen for Colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy and tropical birds calling from the dense undergrowth. The forest trail is steep but well-maintained, crossing streams and passing through groves of giant ferns and moss-draped trees. The air is humid and alive with the sounds of the tropical forest. Arrive at Machame Camp in the cloud forest as mist rolls through the trees.
Trek through the last of the forest and emerge onto the dramatic Shira Plateau — one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic areas. The landscape transforms from dense trees to open moorland with giant heathers, lobelia, and everlasting flowers. Views open up dramatically as you gain altitude with Kibo Peak looming ahead and the Shira Plateau stretching before you. The vast open landscape and clear mountain air are exhilarating after the enclosed forest trail. Arrive at Shira Camp with panoramic views of Kibo Peak.
Critical acclimatization day following the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. Trek up to Lava Tower at 4,630m — a dramatic volcanic rock formation where the altitude becomes palpable. This altitude exposure is essential for summit success, triggering your body's acclimatization response. The surreal Senecio forest surrounding Barranco Camp with giant groundsel plants — some over 5 meters tall — looks like a landscape from another planet. These bizarre plants are found only on Africa's highest mountains.
Morning scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — the most exciting section of the entire Machame route. The near-vertical rock face looks intimidating from below but is manageable with guide assistance, requiring hands-on scrambling rather than technical climbing. The views from the top of the Barranco Wall are breathtaking — the entire southern slopes of Kilimanjaro spread before you with clouds swirling below. Continue traversing through the alpine desert landscape to Karanga Valley camp.
This is the extra day that makes the crucial difference in summit success rates. Take a short acclimatization hike up toward Barafu base camp and back — climbing to around 4,200m before descending to sleep at Karanga. The rest of the day is spent resting, hydrating extensively, and preparing mentally for summit night. Your guides will brief you on what to expect during the midnight summit push — the route, timing, clothing layers, and mental preparation. Eat well and attempt to sleep early.
Trek to Barafu base camp in the morning. Rest, eat, and attempt to sleep until midnight. Depart at midnight trekking through the night under brilliant stars in sub-zero temperatures. The final push to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim is the most challenging section — steep volcanic scree, thin air, and extreme cold test every ounce of your determination. Watch the sunrise from near the summit — one of the most incredible moments of your life as the sky explodes in color above the clouds stretching to the horizon. Continue along the crater rim past glaciers to Uhuru Peak — 5,895m — the Roof of Africa. Celebrate, photograph the iconic summit sign, then descend to Barafu for a brief rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Final descent through the lush montane rainforest to Mweka Gate. The walk down through the forest after the summit is pure joy — warm air, birdsong, and the satisfaction of achievement. Receive your summit certificate at the gate — proof of your incredible accomplishment. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Celebrate your conquest of Africa's highest peak with a well-deserved hot shower, cold drink, and celebratory dinner!
